This is a guest post by my wonderful wife, Alicia Ploof, she is currently a coordinator in the kids ministry, Freedom Kids, at our remarkable church, Freedom Church. She is an amazing servant of God in our home and in our church. Every week she leads a team that makes sure children from babies through five years old are prayed over and hear about Jesus on their level.
“Volunteering isn’t something you got to do. It’s something you GET to do.” Pastor JR Lee
On July 28, 2013 my family and I walked into a church. It was still new to us; only our second Sunday there. Little did I know that this Sunday would be a huge game changer for me. Our connections Pastor told the story of how Jesus washed His disciples’ feet. By doing this, Jesus “showed them the full extent of His love.” (John 13:1) WAIT! If Jesus, the man who died for me, could serve others, then what the heck am I doing?! By the end of the message, I found myself squirming in my seat and couldn’t wait to get outside to sign up to volunteer.
Naturally, I chose kids ministry, having taught preschool and been a nanny for many years, it seemed like the best fit. I’ve always known that working with kids was what I was supposed to do, but it wasn’t until I began serving kids and their families that I realized I was finally where God wanted me to be.
Fast forward one and half years later and I cannot imagine my life without getting to serve. The growth that I have experienced that last 17 months far outweighs the development of my spiritual life the first ten years.
I love children’s ministry because it allows me to contribute to the future of kid’s relationships with Jesus by setting a foundation that will last a lifetime. 1Peter 5:2 says “Be shepherd’s of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers-not because you must, but because you are willing…” I love this! I don’t “got” to do anything! I GET to!! It’s not an obligation. I do it out of eagerness to serve others. I don’t have to wake up way before the sun every Sunday and spend many hours serving; I GET to! I don’t have to hug on crying kids, wipe noses, and build Lego towers; I GET to show them the love of Jesus! I don’t have to spend a whole evening cutting out hearts for a preschool craft; I GET to so our little ones will have something to share with their families so they can live out their faith together.
I am so grateful that God has gifted me with a heart for children. I am so blessed to be able to serve, surrounded by an amazing team of others who not only invest in those same kids, but in my life and family. Serving is not about what I do. It’s who I am.
